The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects freedom of expression. Compared to other countries, expressing thoughts in a public forum could have severe consequences, from assassinations to imprisonment. In a post 9/11 America those who defend the Patriot's Act claim it supersedes the rights of the First Amendment - where expressing views or thoughts could land a person in as much hot water as if in a country ruled by a dictator.
